Watch the short video clip from the link below. This story is about a boy that received a present from his mother. At first the boy was not happy about the present, but then he changed his mind.

I want you to consider why he might not have liked the present at the start and what made him change his mind?

Create a diary entry from the boy’s perspective about receiving the present.

Features of a diary

  • Start with ‘Dear diary’
  • First person
  • Thoughts and feelings
  • Past tense
  • Use your senses
  • Chronological order
  • Time conjunctions

Don’t forget to include:

  • Full stops and capital letters
  • Subordinating conjunctions (if, so, because, which, when, however etc.)
  • Fronted adverbials

Don’t forget to check your writing for missing words, spellings and punctuation.

Use the sentence structure steps like we do in class:

  1. Say your sentence out loud
  2. Count how many words are in your sentence (using your fingers)
  3. Write your sentence down
  4. Re-read your sentence and check for any mistakes (punctuation, spellings, missing words etc.)
