Finding Pairs of values

This week’s algebra work **further** work on finding pairs of values.

Remember

A simple example of this is:

a + b = 5 so what could a and b be?

- a could be 4 and b could be 1
- a could be 3 and b could be 2
- there are other possibilities obviously

Sometimes there are other rules to meet though, for example:

a + b = 5 but a is always odd so what possibilities are there?

- A could 1, 3 or 5 and be would be its partner (e.g. 1+4)
- A could not be 2 as it is not odd

I have included 3 worksheets that gives you some fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

I have also included some arithmetic questions this week to practice.

Two-Step Algebra Problems

Last week, I set you work on one-step algebra problems where you used inverse operations to find missing numbers. This week the problems will have two steps and again you will be using inverse operations. **This is very much like the missing number questions we have done where you start with the answer and work backwards using inverses to find the starting number. **

For example:

A number has 5 added to it and is then multiplied by 4 to give an answer of 60. As a number sentence this would be n + 5 x 4 =60

To find the number we would work backwards using the inverse so it would be:

60 ÷ 4 – 5 = 10

The same applies to two-step algebra. For example, 5x + 3 = 28

This means five times x add 3 is 28 so the inverse would be 28 – 3 ÷ 5 = 5 so x = 5!

Start with the answer and work backwards using the inverse.

**Grammar**

Following on from our work on using Standard English, complete the worksheet. Remember, using Standard English essentially means making sure it makes sense. This could be the tense, missing word, not using slang and crucially make sure the correct verbs are being used (for example, was/were).

**Writing**

We have been writing about WWII using *The boy in the striped pyjamas *as our inspiration. Last week, you wrote a story from a different perspective (the train). This week I would like you to use what we learnt and your experience of writing that story to write a story from the point of view of a fire engine in London during The Blitz.

Knowledge of multiplication tables is essential for the algebra work that you will be doing so spend 15 minutes per day, before you do you Maths work, practising these. You all know you *Times Table Rock Stars *log-on details.

**One Step Algebra Problems **

In algebra unknown values (numbers) are represented by letters.

2 + a = 7

In this example we would use an inverse operation to calculate 7-2=5 to work out that a represents 5.

If a letter has number right next to it, it means multiplied so 7a means a multiplied by 7. If a represented 3, 7a actually means 7 x a which means 7 x 3 =21.

If a letter has a line under it, in the style of a fraction, it means divided by so b/7 means b divided by 7. Therefore if b represented 21, b/7 would equal 21 divided by 7 so it would be 3.

For all of these operations use inverse operations to find the missing numbers.

- a + 11 = 15 would be solved by the inverse so 15-11 = 4 so a =4
- a – 7 = 5 would be 5+7 = 12 so a would be 12
- 4a = 20 would be 20 divided by 4 so a would be 5
- a/3 = 5 would be 5 x 3 so a would be 15.
- As we learnt in class, there are some situations where the inverse doesn’t work so the key is to test your answer in the original calculation to check if it works.

Sometimes the operations used in algebra are known as functions so in this example the function applied is it has been multiplied by 7.

5 x 7 =35

Now complete the one-step algebra worksheet.
